Words are powerful.
Sticks and stones may break your bones... but bones heal and (usually) leave little emotional scarring.
Words can cut deep and leave a lasting impact.
Has someone ever said something to you that really stung, and you remembered it even years later?
Me too.
That's why I love affirmations and how they can come in and save the day (or year, or lifetime).
Simply put, affirmations are declarations that we make to ourselves throughout the day.
We all do affirmations every day, whether we realize it or not. Any thought that we repeat to ourselves on a daily basis or at certain times in our lives becomes an affirmation.
Unfortunately, a lot of us fall victim to the negative ones:
“I could never do that”
“I can't afford that”
“I totally screwed up again”
Sound familiar? It's a sad truth for many of us that our internal dialogue is more negative than positive. But there are a few simple ways to turn things around, and affirmations are one of them.
Affirmations wield an extraordinary power in shaping our mindset which then influences our actions. Rooted in the belief that our thoughts have the ability to manifest into reality, affirmations serve as a tool to rewire the subconscious mind, nurturing a mindset of positivity and self-love.
At its core, affirmations are simple yet powerful statements crafted to counteract negative self-talk and beliefs.
By repeating affirmations consistently, we can cultivate a more optimistic outlook and boost our self confidence.
The process of creating and reciting affirmations involves affirming your desired outcomes, traits, or beliefs, reinforcing them until they become deeply ingrained in the psyche.
Affirmations are personal and can be adapted to whichever situation you are facing- whether a health crisis, a battle with an internal demon, or following financial goals.
Studies in psychology have demonstrated the efficacy of affirmations in improving various aspects of well-being, from reducing stress and anxiety to enhancing performance and resilience.
When confronted with challenges or setbacks, affirmations serve as a source of strength and motivation, reminding us of our inherent worth and capabilities.
I have used affirmations regularly throughout my life, and notice that when I fall away from my normal routine of affirmations in the morning and evening, my negative self-talk becomes much worse.
When I was struggling the hardest with self-love and criticism, I created a short list of affirmations that I would substitute with any low emotions and internal dialogue that came up.
The affirmations were simple:
I am love.
I love myself and I love others at all times.
I am constantly attracting love.
When I noticed myself spiraling down into mental doom and gloom, I would immediately repeat this short burst of affirmations.
It always pulled my mind back from the dark and into the light.
One of the key reasons that affirmations work is through the principle of cognitive restructuring. That's basically a fancy neuroscience phrase that means rearranging the puzzle pieces in your mind to make happy pictures instead of sad ones.
When we consistently affirm positive beliefs, we gradually overwrite negative thought patterns, which can shift a mindset to growth and positivity.
This process not only impacts our perception of ourselves but also influences how we engage with the world around us.
Essentially affirmations function as a mirror, reflecting back to us our belief of our own worth and potential.
By implementing even a few affirmations as a daily practice, you can cultivate a deep sense of self-love and acceptance.
Trust me, I’ve done it many times over.
There are many spiritual and mental health practices you can implement into your day, but I will always believe affirmations are the simplest and most impactful.
The results are immediate and can change a low, negative mindset into one that is at least neutral and not detrimental to your mental health.
Words are powerful.
What kind are you speaking to yourself and your heart every day?
