If you’re anything like me, you have periods of your life that are filled with stress, worry, and a bit of anxiety.
Finding moments of calm and mental clarity is difficult when our minds are constantly flashing between things that happened in the past or things that might happen in the future.
When I started meditating about 20 years ago, I didnt really know it was called meditating. I would just be so exhausted mentally that I was in a total brain fog and needed to decompress somehow.
So I would just sit and stare at the wall, or sometimes the ceiling. And although the thoughts still came, I tried not to grab onto them and go down the rabbit hole, instead just letting them pass and try and find that next moment of bliss between when thoughts and emotions would come up.
It really was just spacing out in a way, but I called it empty mind, and it became a tool for me to better handle life.
I learned much later that meditation is an ancient practice that has been used for thousands of years and has a multitude of benefits for your mind, body, and soul. The best part is that anyone can apply simple techniques and tap into a much more peaceful and joyful existence, instead of just trying to get through the day.
Regular meditation practice can have numerous benefits, including stress reduction, improved concentration, heightened self-awareness, and emotional stability. It can also enhance creativity, promote better sleep, and boost overall well-being.
I don’t know a single person who meditates and does not see and feel the benefits.
Key Takeaways
Meditation is a practice that involves training the mind to focus and redirect thoughts. So instead of attaching to one thought and riding it all the way down into what my friend calls ‘imagination hijacking,’ you just simply acknowledge the thought and let it pass.
Meditation is about being fully present in the moment without judgment of what comes up for you.
So when a bad memory or frustrating situation pops into your mind, instead of letting all of the emotions flood back to you and reliving the experience, you just recognize that it came up, and don’t judge it. Let it go.
The most powerful tool that comes from a meditation practice is the ability to enhance your self-awareness and increase your productivity as a result.
Meditation is not about sitting on a pillow cross-legged and praying to someone or something. It’s not about ignoring your thoughts or feelings, and its not about being a person who doesn’t honor themselves.
Meditation has been practiced for centuries in different cultures and religions all around the globe. It’s a simple practice that is easy to implement and can have transformative effects on your life, improving your mental, emotional, and physical well-being.
Through meditation, you learn to cultivate a sense of inner calm and stillness, even in the midst of some of the most challenging time.
I went through a period of repeated illnesses and infections recently, where I was unwell for months at a time. Even with constant doctor visits and rounds of medication, there was no improvement and we were still unsure of what the actual problem was.
It was a terrifying time in my life, and I can say that meditation was a saving grace for me.
During long nights and days when my mind was rattled with worst-case scenarios and in some instances, planning to face my mortality, meditation brought me peace. When I would recognize the harm my persistent thoughts was causing my already unwell body and mind, I would just resolve to sit and attempt to quiet my mind, and let any thoughts and emotions pass through me.
Without meditation, I am not sure if I would have had the mental or emotional strength to face the situation on a day-to-day basis. My empty mind allowed me sanity, even for brief moments. And this sanity allowed me to face each next step, and it also allowed my mind enough calm to bring sleep when I desperately needed it.
If you're new to meditation, it's helpful to start with shorter sessions, even just 2 or 3 minutes. You can gradually increase the duration as you become more comfortable.
There are many guided meditation resources available. Guided meditations are great because they give you guidance on what and where to focus your thoughts.
By incorporating meditation into your daily routine, you can strengthen your ability to focus, redirect your thoughts, and cultivate a more peaceful and resilient mind.
Meditation offers numerous benefits for overall wellbeing- mind, body, and soul. It’s known to reduce stress by calming the mind and decreasing the stress hormone cortisol. Developing a regular practice of meditation can help you achieve a state of mental clarity that will clear away mental fog and enhance your focus and concentration.
Meditation also contributes to enhanced emotional well-being through self-awareness, allowing you to respond to challenging situations with calmness and compassion vs stress or emotional outbursts.
Meditation has been shown to have a positive impact on sleep quality, which I have personally noticed more than anything.
Do you struggle to fall asleep or stay asleep?
An overactive mind is often the culprit.
Because it reduces blood pressure and inflammation, a regular meditation practice can also contribute to improved physical health. Overall, incorporating meditation into your daily routine can lead to a sense of balance and well-being in both mind and body which will create a ripple effect in your life and relationships.
By devoting time to quiet reflection and mindfulness, we can develop greater awareness of our thoughts, emotions, and sensations. This increased awareness allows you to observe your thoughts without getting caught up in them, promoting a sense of detachment and peace.
Research has shown that individuals who regularly meditate experience reduced stress levels, increased mental clarity, and enhanced emotional resilience. Studies have also shown that meditation can improve sleep patterns, decrease the risk of cardiovascular diseases, and even boost the immune system.
By taking the time to quiet the mind and connect with the present moment, meditation can enhance many aspects of your life, especially your relationships. My relationship with myself as well as the people closest to me has improved greatly when I am consistent with my meditation practice.
If you want to start meditating, it's important to create a peaceful and uninterrupted space where you can fully focus on your practice. This can be anywhere- even your car (not while driving!). You can find a quiet corner in your home or a quiet place to sit outside, which is my favorite. Being outdoors in nature with fresh air just seems to increase calmness and present-moment awareness.
Once you’ve found your quiet space, find a comfortable position that allows you to be relaxed yet alert- if you lay down, you’re more likely to fall asleep. The key is to find a posture that supports your body while keeping you awake and attentive; I always find that back support is important for me.
An easy way to start a meditation is just to focus on your breath. Take a moment to connect with your breath, feeling the sensation of air entering and leaving your body. Focus on each inhale and exhale, letting go of any thoughts or distractions that arise. You can also repeat a short phrase or a few words to help you concentrate, also known as a mantra.
Here is one of my favorite mantras for centered breathing:
With each inhale, I am attracting everything I need on my journey.
With each exhale, I am letting go of what no longer serves me.
The breath will serve as your anchor, bringing you back to the present moment whenever your mind starts to wander. A mantra helps with this.
Remember, meditation is a skill that requires patience and consistency. Start with just a few minutes each day, gradually increasing the duration as you become more comfortable. Put your phone on airplane mode and set a timer for a few minutes.
Start small, and don't expect immediate results, but know you are developing a habit that can have a massive positive impact on your life. Meditation is a journey that unfolds over time.
Embrace the process and be kind to yourself along the way.
To fully benefit from meditation, it's important to make it a regular part of your daily routine. By setting aside a specific time each day for your meditation practice, you can establish consistency and reap the rewards of this ancient practice.
I find that the days I start with mindfulness and meditation turn out to be the most centered and enjoyable days; I have less stress and emotional ups and downs and seem to handle life’s curveballs better.
Any moments for mindfulness are beneficial, even during a lunch break, or before bedtime. Consistency is key, so set aside a few moments to practice meditation every day, even if it's just for a few minutes.
Developing the habit is just as valuable as the meditation itself.
Patience is essential as you go down your personal path with meditation, just like anything. It may take time to quiet your thoughts and fully embrace the practice, but with regularity you'll notice a shift in your mental clarity, emotional well-being, and physical health.
Incorporating meditation into your daily routine is a commitment to your self-care and personal growth. Embrace this practice with an open mind and a willingness to explore the depths of yourself. I honestly think that many of us feel that facing ourselves and our deep thoughts is frightening, but I promise that the results are worthwhile.
Morning meditation is a powerful practice that can set the tone for the rest of your day. It has been embraced by many successful people as a tool for enhancing performance, reducing stress, and fostering overall wellness.
By starting your day with a morning meditation, you can establish a positive mindset that will carry you through the challenges ahead. When we can center ourselves, we can let go of any lingering negative emotions and cultivate a sense of calm and clarity.
One of the key benefits of morning meditation is stress reduction. Our cortisol levels (the stress hormone) are highest in the morning, so starting your day in a more calm and centered state can have a myriad of benefits.
Morning meditation can also help improve focus and productivity. As you quiet the mind and bring attention to your breath, you train your brain to stay present and avoid distractions. This heightened focus allows you to tackle tasks with clarity and efficiency as they arise throughout the day.
Morning meditation triggers positive changes in both the brain and body. It has been linked to increased gray matter (responsible for processing information and coordinating bodily functions), decreased activity in the amygdala (the brain's fear center), and enhanced connectivity between different regions of the brain.
It also helps regulate circadian rhythms- the natural cycle of when your body wants to sleep and wake up. This is crucial for someone like me who ends up staying up too late and regretting it in the morning.
Benefits of Morning Meditation:
By making morning meditation a part of your daily routine, you can experience the transformative power of this practice and enjoy a greater sense of well-being, focus, and creativity throughout your day.
Incorporating meditation into your daily routine can have a profound impact on your overall well-being. By taking just a few minutes each day to practice meditation, you can unlock a wealth of benefits, including improved focus, stress relief, and emotional wellness.
Be patient with yourself as you begin your meditation practice. It’s great to have a goal of meditating for an hour, but you should be proud of yourself even if you only sit for 5 minutes.
The benefits of meditation are incredible, and I can say that my life is genuinely better when I meditate on a regular basis.
When you’re ready to embrace the potential of meditation and enjoy a more peaceful and fulfilling life, start with med. The fact is that meditation allows us to release and let go of difficult things (stress, worry, negative self talk) so we are able to make space for the positive things that can replace them.
